A high-ranking US military official has stated that Bitcoin (BTC) can be used as a strategic 'power projection tool' for the United States, beyond being a mere financial asset.
According to the cryptocurrency specialized media outlet Cointelegraph, US Navy Admiral Samuel Paparo evaluated Bitcoin as a “valuable computer science tool” during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, emphasizing its potential for national security applications.
Paparo stated, “Beyond its economic functions, it has significant computer science utility,” and pointed to its proof-of-work based structure, which demands high costs in the event of a network attack, as a key strength.
He explained that Bitcoin's technical structure could offer strategic advantages in terms of cybersecurity. His assessment is that the very structure, which requires immense resources if an attacker tries to compromise the network, acts as a defense mechanism.
Furthermore, Paparo also referred to Bitcoin as 'power projection,' meaning a means to expand national influence. This is interpreted as a new type of strategic asset that can exert influence through a technology-based network, in addition to existing military or economic power.
These remarks are evaluated as an example showing that the perspective on Bitcoin is expanding beyond the financial realm to a national strategic asset. It is highly significant that its technical structure itself can be linked to security has been officially mentioned.
