Bloomberg reported on the 22nd (local time) that Elon Musk announced Tesla plans to invest $3 billion to build a research fab on its 'Giga Texas' campus site.
Musk stated this during a conference call held after Tesla's earnings announcement that day, adding that it would be capable of producing thousands of wafers per month.
He said, "As far as I understand, Tesla will be in charge of the research fab, and SpaceX will handle the initial part of 'Terafab'."
This is interpreted to mean that a pilot line will be created first to verify the feasibility of the Terafab project, which aims to build a super-large semiconductor production facility.
He also stated, "We plan to utilize Intel's advanced '14A' process. It is cutting-edge technology but not yet fully complete." He added, "However, by the time Terafab is fully expanded, 14A should be mature enough or ready for practical deployment, so it seems like the right direction."
Musk did not clearly state whether they would use Intel's existing factories or license the technology.
