A man in his 30s who attempted to rob and murder a taxi driver after experiencing financial difficulties due to a coin investment scam has been sentenced to prison.
The 12th Criminal Division of the Daejeon District Court (Presiding Judge Kim Byeong-man) announced on the 23rd that it sentenced Mr. A (35), who was indicted on charges of attempted robbery-murder, to 8 years in prison.
Mr. A was brought to trial on charges that on October 17 last year, around 1 AM, he boarded a taxi in Daedeok-gu, Daejeon, asked to go to a secluded place, then threatened taxi driver Mr. B (in his 70s) with a weapon to demand money, and when Mr. B tried to escape, he stabbed Mr. B's chest and other areas with a weapon, attempting to kill him.
At the time, a resident who heard Mr. B's screams appeared at the scene, preventing the murder, but Mr. B suffered injuries requiring 6 weeks of hospital treatment.
It was investigated that Mr. A had suffered a coin betting investment scam and even took out private loans, falling into financial hardship, and then attempted to steal money to pay off his debts.
The court ruled, "The defendant planned the robbery, and it appears he had at least an indirect intent to kill. The victim suffered injuries and experienced great mental shock, unable to return to his livelihood as a taxi driver, and no compensation has been made. However, considering that it does not appear he planned the robbery-murder from the beginning, these factors were taken into account."
