The Chinese government has positively evaluated the refund of tariffs collected by the U.S. administration under Donald Trump, which were later ruled illegal.
According to China Central Television (CCTV) on the 23rd, He Yongqian, spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce, held a regular press conference that afternoon and stated regarding the U.S. government's initiation of tariff refund procedures that it is "a step that helps in correcting mistakes."
He stated, "The Chinese side has consistently opposed any form of unilateral additional tariff imposition measures," and "Unilateral measures such as the U.S. side's reciprocal tariffs or fentanyl tariffs not only violate international economic and trade rules but also violate U.S. domestic law."
He added, "This harms the global economic and trade order and does not serve the interests of all parties," and "Tariffs are directly collected by U.S. customs from U.S. importers and are ultimately borne by American consumers."
He also suggested that "Chinese export companies should actively communicate with relevant stakeholders in conjunction with their actual situations and safeguard their legitimate and justified rights and interests."
Following the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in February that the Trump administration's imposition of tariffs based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) was an illegal act that infringed on Congress's authority, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) initiated tariff refund procedures amounting to approximately 166 billion dollars (about 245 trillion won) on the 20th (local time).
