A DDoS attack exploiting a zero-day vulnerability occurred on the Litecoin network, but it was quickly recovered through chain reorganization, maintaining system stability.
According to cryptocurrency media outlet Bitcoinist on April 27 (local time), the Litecoin (LTC) network was subjected to a Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack over the weekend. This attack was based on a zero-day vulnerability in the MimbleWimble Extension Block (MWEB) privacy layer and caused temporary disruptions to the operations of some mining pools.
The attacker attempted a double-spend attack targeting cross-chain swap protocols by exploiting this vulnerability. This involved generating invalid MWEB transactions through outdated mining nodes and using them to move coins to decentralized exchanges. It was confirmed that the normal processing flow of some mining pools was disrupted during this process.
The Litecoin Foundation announced that the network resolved the issue through a 13-block reorganization (reorg). They emphasized that all invalid transactions were removed during this process, and legitimate transactions were not affected. The vulnerability has now been patched, and the network is operating normally.
The possibility of internal information leakage regarding this attack has also been raised. Alex Shevchenko, CEO of Aurora Labs, mentioned the possibility that the attacker was aware of the vulnerability in advance, suggesting insider involvement rather than a simple zero-day attack. He cited the fact that some hashrates were already updated as evidence.
Market reaction was limited. The price of Litecoin fell by only about 1.2% in a day, staying around $55.92, and despite the fear caused by the attack, there was no significant impact. The industry believes that the quick response and chain recovery capabilities partially sustained investor confidence.
