Shiba Inu (SHIB) is attempting to transform from a simple meme coin into an ecosystem token with real utility, but it has not yet reached the stage of widespread adoption.
According to cryptocurrency media outlet Watcher.Guru on April 29 (local time), Shiba Inu has been building various real-world use cases over the past few years, shedding its 'meme coin' image and evolving into a utility-focused project.
The most crucial development is Shibarium, the Layer 2 network launched in 2023. This network enables the development of SHIB ecosystem-based applications and is designed to simultaneously reduce transaction costs and improve processing speed. As of early 2026, the cumulative number of transactions has surpassed 500 million, laying the groundwork for ecosystem expansion.
In addition, Shiba Inu is developing ShibOS, a platform that supports the transition from Web2 to Web3. It aims to provide the necessary infrastructure for businesses and developers to enter the blockchain environment, raising the possibility of becoming a major service when Web3 expands in the future.
Furthermore, ventures into the metaverse and blockchain gaming sectors are also underway. While such expansion is considered a key driver for increasing user inflow into the ecosystem, the fact that most projects are still in their early stages is pointed out as a limitation.
Indeed, low adoption rates and high price volatility remain unresolved challenges. Particularly, its use as a payment method is restricted by a lack of merchant adoption, and Shibarium also needs to secure a larger user base.
