Strait of Hormuz
Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated on the 6th (local time) that Iran is still reviewing the US proposal for ending the war, according to Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency.
In an interview with ISNA news agency, Baghaei said, "Iran is still reviewing the US plans and proposals, and will convey Iran's comprehensive stance to Pakistan after consolidating it."
In this regard, ISNA added, "It is worth noting that some US media outlets have recently attempted to conceal the failure of the US President's 'Project Freedom' by spreading speculation and fake news to create a favorable atmosphere for Trump and the United States."
ISNA pointed out, "The US media outlet Axios reported some details of a draft agreement being reviewed by the US and Iran, but the agreement contained unreasonable and unrealistic proposals that our authorities recently strongly rejected."
It also reported, "We have received reliable information that some of the Axios reports are for media speculation and creating an atmosphere, and what the Iranian negotiation team is discussing is the 'end of the war' issue, and the nuclear issue is not a subject of discussion at the current stage of negotiations."
This is noteworthy as it draws a line against the observation that the US and Iran are close to reaching an agreement to end the war.
The Axios report mentioned by ISNA news agency stated that the US and Iran were close to signing a 'one-page' Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) containing a framework to end the war and resolve the nuclear issue.
The MOU is said to include a temporary halt (moratorium) on Iran's nuclear enrichment, the lifting of US sanctions against Iran and the release of some frozen funds, the gradual lifting of restrictions on Iran's passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and the gradual lifting of the US maritime blockade of Iran.
The US White House is reportedly awaiting Iran's response to key issues within 48 hours.
