Cardano (ADA) has taken a key step ahead of its mainnet upgrade. With the van Rossem hardfork submitted to the preview testnet, the first step towards transitioning to protocol version 11 has been confirmed.
UToday reported on May 6 that Intersect, a member-based organization within the Cardano ecosystem, submitted the van Rossem hardfork to the preview testnet. Intersect stated, “The van Rossem Hardfork GA was submitted to the preview testnet today.”
A pre-release of Cardano Node version 11.0.1 was also unveiled. This version was presented as a prerequisite for safely passing the hardfork. SPOs, DApps, and developers active in the preview environment were advised to upgrade as soon as possible.
Node 11.0.1 was described as the first node release to support Cardano's intra-era hardfork. This node enables the protocol version 11 upgrade once hardfork governance actions are implemented on-chain through voting by SPOs, DReps, and the Constitutional Committee.
The van Rossem intra-era hardfork is an upgrade that raises Cardano's preview to protocol version 11. During this upgrade process, the Cardano mainnet protocol will transition to major version 11 and minor version 0. Since the ledger remains in the Conway era, no separate era transition will occur.
Protocol version 11 is centered on bundling Plutus performance, ledger consistency, and node-level security improvements into a single intra-era upgrade. Due to the nature of an intra-era hardfork, the transaction structure does not change, and the overall upgrade burden on the ecosystem is reduced.
Following this upgrade, several new Plutus primitives defined in CIP-0109, CIP-0132, CIP-0133, CIP-0138, and CIP-0153 will be provided. The upgrade integrates the built-in function configurations across Plutus V1, V2, and V3, allowing existing Plutus V1 and V2 scripts to utilize the full range of built-in functions after the hardfork.
According to the Cardano Constitution, at least 85% of stake pools, based on active stake, must upgrade to a node version that supports protocol version 11 before the governance action is ratified. The van Rossem hardfork has entered the validation phase prior to mainnet transition through its submission to the preview testnet and the release of Node 11.0.1.
