'Terafab Project' for AI chip production…estimated to reach $119 billion including expansion
Elon Musk's space company SpaceX is embarking on the construction of a super large semiconductor factory in Texas, USA, for the production of semiconductors for artificial intelligence (AI) and space data centers.
AFP reported on the 6th (local time) that SpaceX plans to build a semiconductor production facility called 'Terafab' in Grimes County, northwest of Houston, Texas.
At least $55 billion (approximately 80 trillion won) is expected to be invested in the factory's construction, but if additional expansion is included, the total investment is estimated to reach $119 billion (approximately 173 trillion won).
Musk stated that electric vehicle maker Tesla and SpaceX will jointly operate this facility.
Terafab is a project being pursued for the production of semiconductors necessary for AI, robots, and space data centers.
Although Musk has no experience in the semiconductor field, he has argued for the necessity of in-house production, stating that the computing demands of Tesla and SpaceX will exceed the production capacities of global semiconductor suppliers.
Musk's goal is the production of chips that support 100-200 GW (gigawatts) of computing power on Earth and semiconductors that support 1 TW (terawatt) of computing power in space.
The Grimes County Council, where the factory will be located, plans to discuss whether to approve tax breaks for the Terafab project on the 3rd of next month.
Grimes County evaluated the Terafab project as "an investment that will significantly expand semiconductor production capacity within the United States."
