U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visits the Italian Prime Minister's Office
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on the 8th (local time) that he expects to receive a response from Iran.
According to Reuters and other sources, Secretary Rubio met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the same day and told reporters, "I hope Iran will put forward a serious proposal within hours."
Previously, on the 6th, U.S. media reported that the United States and Iran were close to signing a one-page memorandum of understanding (MOU) containing a peace agreement, and it was reported that the White House was waiting for Iran's response within 48 hours. Iran stated that it is reviewing the U.S. proposal.
Regarding the deployment of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) troops, Secretary Rubio said, "Specific issues related to U.S. troops stationed in Italy were not discussed at today's meeting," adding, "The issue of NATO troop deployment is ultimately a matter for President Donald Trump to decide."
When asked on the 30th of last month if he would consider reducing U.S. troops in Spain and Italy, like in Germany, President Trump replied, "Perhaps." As of the end of last year, approximately 12,600 U.S. troops were stationed in Italy. This is the second-largest number in Europe after Germany.
When asked about the atmosphere of his audience with Pope Leo XIV the previous day, Secretary Rubio commented, "The Church is an important global institution," and "It was very positive."
Regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, he said, "We are ready to play a mediating role," but added, "If efforts do not progress, I don't want to waste time."
The U.S.-mediated peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have been suspended due to the situation in the Middle East.
Secretary Rubio said that the 'Taiwan issue' is highly likely to be discussed during President Trump's visit to China next week, adding, "Stability is needed throughout the Taiwan Strait."
