The government has decided to closely consult with the US side regarding its decision to impose tariffs on drones and to thoroughly examine the impact on the domestic drone industry.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 14th, the US White House announced on the 13th (local time) a proclamation imposing tariffs on drones and key components based on Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.
The White House explained that this measure aims to reduce reliance on overseas supply chains, address cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and expand domestic drone production capabilities.
Accordingly, from September 3rd, a high tariff of 100% will be imposed on ▲ drones exceeding 25kg maximum takeoff weight ▲ drones equipped with thermal imaging equipment ▲ drone docking stations and some key components.
Drones under 25kg not equipped with thermal imaging equipment will be subject to a 25% tariff, and some parts will be subject to a 25% tariff starting February 9th next year.
Products from companies that have obtained drone-related certification or approval from the US Department of War or the Federal Communications Commission will have their enforcement postponed until February 9th next year.
However, for products from major allied countries including Korea, Japan, Taiwan, the European Union (EU), Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, a cap has been set so that the total tariff rate does not exceed 15% if it is proven that key components and technology are domestically produced or US-made.
Furthermore, companies that decide to establish, repair, or expand drone and related component production facilities in the US before January 20, 2029, can import equipment and products corresponding to their estimated annual production during the construction period into the US without Section 232 tariffs, subject to approval by the US Department of Commerce.
An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy stated, 'We will closely consult with the US side on matters that have not yet been finalized, such as detailed certification standards and scope of application for Korean-made drones to receive a preferential tariff rate of up to 15%.' He added, 'We plan to thoroughly examine the impact on our industry together with relevant ministries.'
