Wolf escape draws extraordinary attention at home and abroad... Related posts and comments pour in
While the whereabouts of 'Neukgu', a wolf that escaped from the safari at Daejeon O-World (zoo) on the morning of the 8th, remain unknown for the third day, it has been confirmed that Neukgu is generating buzz even overseas, with online communities creating a cryptocurrency.
According to Yonhap News coverage on the 10th, a coin named 'Neukgu' is being circulated on some overseas decentralized cryptocurrency exchanges (DEXs) such as PumpSwap.
This coin is a typical memecoin (trending cryptocurrency) created on the 8th, with a supply of 160 million units and a total liquidity of about 20,000 dollars.
In addition, an English account 'Neukgu' page has been opened on X (formerly Twitter), and over 500 people have joined so far.
The English description states 'Neukgu, the lonely wolf who escaped from Daejeon O-World,' and continues to post news articles related to the search, wolf photos, and netizens' reactions.
On this page, posts like 'Neukgu is lonely but independent,' 'Leaving into the sunset. You can never find me,' 'Spinning around and enjoying the best life,' and 'Find me if you can' are being uploaded, cheering for Neukgu.
However, posts and photos that seem to continuously promote the Neukgu coin are also being uploaded on this page, requiring caution.
On major social networking services (SNS) like X, Instagram, and Threads, as well as online communities such as local mom cafes, posts and comments expressing sympathy for Neukgu and wishing for its free life are pouring in.
Netizens commented, 'It's incredibly smart to dig a hole and escape,' 'Shawshank Redemption wolf version,' 'Don't kill it like O-World's puma Porong,' 'I'd rather it not be caught and live freely,' and 'It's raining all day, how cold and scared must it be?'
President Lee Jae-myung also posted a message on X at 9:18 PM the day before, supporting 'Neukgu's safe return.' This post has been reposted 1,287 times and received 4,567 likes so far.
Neukgu is a descendant of wolves brought in from Saratov Oblast, Russia, in 2008 as part of the 'Korean Wolf' restoration project.
O-World has been the only institution in Korea to carry out the Korean wolf restoration project, as the species is presumed to be extinct in the wild.
O-World raised Neukgu, born in January 2024, by separating it from adult wolves at an early age and employing artificial rearing methods.
Search authorities have been tracking Neukgu's whereabouts near O-World for the third day.
