As of the morning of the 8th, the whereabouts of 'Neukgu,' a wolf that escaped from Daejeon O-World (zoo) safari, remain unknown for the third day. The incident has become a hot topic even overseas, leading to the emergence of a cryptocurrency.
According to Yonhap News's coverage on the 10th, a memecoin named 'Neukgu' after the wolf is being circulated on some overseas cryptocurrency decentralized exchanges (DEXs) like PumpSwap. This coin was created on the 8th, with a supply of 160 million units and a total liquidity of approximately $20,000.
An English account 'Neukgu' page has also been opened on X (formerly Twitter), and approximately 500 people have joined it so far. Along with the introduction 'A lonely wolf that escaped from Daejeon O-World,' news related to the search and messages of support are being posted. However, promotional posts for the coin are also appearing on this page, so caution is advised.
On domestic SNS and online communities as well, messages of support are pouring in, such as "It's smart that it dug a hole and escaped," "Shawshank Redemption wolf version," and "I hope it doesn't get caught and lives freely." President Lee Jae-myung also posted a message on X the previous day, wishing for 'Neukgu's safe return'.
Neukgu is a descendant of a wolf brought from Saratov Oblast, Russia, in 2008 as part of the 'Korean Wolf' restoration project, and was born in January 2024. O-World has been the only institution in Korea to carry out the Korean Wolf restoration project, as the species is presumed to be extinct in the wild.
Search authorities are tracking Neukgu's whereabouts near O-World for the third day.
