Cointelegraph reported that a man who committed cryptocurrency fraud using famous artworks as collateral in the United States was sentenced to over 20 years in prison. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois sentenced Robert Dunlap (55) to 23 years in prison and ordered him to pay restitution to approximately 1,000 victims. Dunlap was found to have falsely claimed that artworks by Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Salvador Dalí, and others were used as collateral, and that approximately $44 billion worth of gold and $1 billion worth of art assets had been verified, while selling a cryptocurrency called 'Meta-1 Coin'. Prosecutors stated that these assets did not actually exist, and many investors suffered losses close to their entire fortunes.
