An incident occurred where retirement funds were lost due to a fake virtual asset wallet app registered on the Apple App Store. Warnings about digital asset security are increasing.
According to CryptoPotato on April 20 (local time), Garrett Dutton, the lead singer of the American band G. Love & Special Sauce, suffered damages from a fake app downloaded from the Apple App Store. He lost assets worth approximately $424,000.
Dutton mistook it for the official app of the hardware wallet company Ledger. The app was named ‘LeddgerLĭve’, a fake with just one letter different. He entered 24 Bitcoin recovery phrases. Immediately after entry, all 5.92 BTC were transferred to an external address.
The app passed Apple's review process and was listed on the official marketplace. Dutton trusted it, but the result was the exact opposite. His private keys were stolen.
Dutton disclosed the damage on X (formerly Twitter), stating that it was his life's savings for retirement. He also requested help to track the funds. Apple has not yet issued a separate statement regarding this incident.
On-chain investigator ZachXBT tracked the flow of funds. The stolen Bitcoin passed through 9 addresses and was then distributed to KuCoin. Circumstances indicating money laundering were confirmed. Analysis suggests the possibility of recovery is low.
Ledger issued a strong warning, emphasizing that recovery phrases should never be entered online. They stated that official software should only be downloaded from their website. They reiterated that recovery phrases should only be managed on the wallet device.
This incident demonstrates that even the official App Store is not a completely safe zone. Virtual asset crimes are becoming more sophisticated. It is crucial for users to adhere to security principles themselves. A single mistake can lead to the loss of all assets.
