As concerns grow that quantum computing could neutralize existing cryptographic systems, Ripple has begun to take proactive action.
According to cryptocurrency media outlet The Block, Ripple plans to complete the construction of a quantum-resistant system by 2028 to protect the XRP Ledger from quantum computer attacks. This decision stems from the judgment that with the rapid advancement of quantum computing technology, cryptocurrency security threats have moved beyond theoretical possibilities to become realistic risks.
This response was triggered by a presentation from Google Quantum AI researchers. Their research suggested the possibility that cryptographic technologies of major blockchains, including Bitcoin (BTC), could be deciphered in a short time with only hundreds of thousands of physical qubits. The industry is increasingly wary that the realization of quantum attacks might come sooner than expected.
Ripple is leveraging the structural strengths of the XRP Ledger to respond. It has already secured a 'key rotation' function that allows cryptographic algorithms to be replaced without interrupting the network, and is currently testing quantum-resistant algorithms approved by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The strategy is to preempt the standards of the post-quantum era based on technical flexibility.
In particular, a significant amount of XRP within the ecosystem maintains high structural security. Assets distributed in accounts with no transaction history do not expose their public keys externally, making them relatively safe from quantum attacks. This is considered a distinguishing feature compared to other blockchains with account-based structures.
Ripple views quantum computing not as a mere technical issue but as a core business risk and is implementing a phased response roadmap. Preparatory work is underway to comprehensively raise the security level.
In a situation where the paradigm of cryptographic technology is changing, securing quantum resistance is emerging as a key variable that will determine the survival of the blockchain ecosystem. Attention is focused on whether Ripple's proactive response will lead to restored market confidence and enhanced technological competitiveness.
