UPS Announces "Focus on Supporting Customers in Exercising Their Rights...Up to 3 Months for Receipt"
U.S. Customs and Border Protection Activates Tariff Refund System...Trump Says "Will Remember Companies That Don't Apply"
As the U.S. federal government initiated the refund process for collections, such as 'reciprocal tariffs,' that were ruled illegal, global logistics companies UPS and FedEx have begun applying for refunds, CNBC reported on the 21st (local time).
According to the report, UPS recently announced that for cargo where it is registered as the importer of record in the U.S., U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is applying for tariff refunds on behalf of customers.
However, UPS explained that it could take up to three months to receive the refund, and only after that would refunds be made to customers.
In a statement, UPS said, "We are focused on supporting customers in fully exercising their rights during the complex refund application process," and "will share progress while closely monitoring legal developments."
FedEx has also started filing tariff refund claims with CBP, CNBC reported.
FedEx explained that the refund process is straightforward and that it would return the refunds received from CBP to shippers and consumers.
Previously, CBP activated an online refund system from the previous day to return approximately $166 billion (about 245 trillion won) in tariffs. Importers and customs brokers can apply for refunds through a dedicated portal.
This measure is a follow-up action to the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in February that the Trump administration's imposition of tariffs based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) was an illegal act that infringed upon the authority of Congress.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump said in a phone interview with CNBC on the same day, when asked about "several large companies like Apple and Amazon not attempting tariff refunds," "If they don't do that, they know me very well," adding, "If they don't do that, I will remember them."
