U.S. President Donald Trump
Public opposition to President Donald Trump in the United States has soared to a record high for his second term, driven by concerns over high oil prices and economic worries stemming from the Iran war.
According to an aggregate of various poll results averaged by the New York Times (NYT) on the 23rd (local time), public opposition to President Trump reached 58%, the highest since the start of his second administration. Approval for President Trump's job performance stood at only 39%.
President Trump's declining approval ratings are due to soaring oil prices in the aftermath of the Iran war and widespread concerns about economic deterioration.
Regarding economic policy, only 34% of American voters supported the Trump administration. Support for inflation countermeasures was a mere 28%.
It appears difficult for President Trump, facing declining approval ratings, to turn the tide.
The opposition Democratic Party is gearing up to make the upcoming November midterm elections a referendum on President Trump.
What is more painful for President Trump is that even within the ruling Republican Party's base, there are signs of defection due to backlash against the Iran war.
Some of the Republican base, including conservative commentator Tucker Carlson, have recently criticized President Trump in opposition to the Iran war.
Among independents with no party affiliation, President Trump's approval rating plummeted from 39% at the beginning of his term to 28% last week, according to a Marquette University Law School poll.
However, the New York Times analyzed that President Trump's hardline immigration policy, which is controversial both inside and outside the US, could actually see an increase in approval due to spreading economic concerns.
