The market's attention is once again focused as the fact that the US military is utilizing Bitcoin not merely as an asset but as 'military technology' has been revealed.
According to the cryptocurrency specialized media Bitcoinist on April 24 (local time), the United States Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) has been confirmed to be actually operating nodes on the Bitcoin (BTC) network and conducting experiments related to cybersecurity.
Commander Samuel Paparo of INDOPACOM stated at a US House Armed Services Committee hearing, “We are currently operating nodes on the Bitcoin network and using them for monitoring and network protection experiments, not for mining.” He defined Bitcoin not as a financial asset but as a computer science-based tool.
Paparo especially highly evaluated Bitcoin's core structures – cryptography, blockchain, and proof-of-work – from a military perspective. He explained that this technology directly impacts strengthening network security and the concept of 'power projection,' and emphasized its significant meaning for national security as well.
He also stated that Bitcoin's decentralized structure and zero-trust based value transfer system can be utilized not only for digital asset protection but also in strategic competitive environments. This suggests its potential for use beyond mere finance, in the cyber battlefield.
Previously, Paparo expressed a similar stance at a Senate hearing, describing Bitcoin as “an enduring protocol and an important computer science tool.” Currently, Bitcoin is trading around $78,370, and discussions about its technical and strategic value are expanding simultaneously.
