Claiming "deceiving consumers by promoting Full Self-Driving not approved in China"
Tesla refutes: "Some features currently implemented...the rest are under development"
Ten Chinese Tesla vehicle owners have filed a class action lawsuit, claiming that Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature constitutes false advertising.
According to Chinese media outlet Xinjingbao (新京报) on the 31st, the Beijing Daxing District People's Court recently held the first trial of a consumer class action lawsuit related to Tesla's FSD feature.
The plaintiffs claimed that Tesla promoted FSD as if it had the capability, but in reality, it had not received approval from Chinese regulatory authorities, and key features were not implemented.
They demanded approximately 3.95 million yuan (about 880 million won) in damages, stating that this constituted false advertising and consumer deception.
They also emphasized that it amounted to fraudulent sales, as Tesla knew the technical limitations of the relevant features but induced consumers to purchase them without fully disclosing these limitations.
The plaintiffs' lawyer explained that the core issue of this lawsuit is whether the 'FSD capability' advertised by Tesla matches the actually provided features.
On the other hand, Tesla reportedly refuted in court that the FSD feature is currently either fully or partially implemented, and the remaining features are continuously under development.
Tesla previously stated on X (formerly Twitter) on the 21st that supervised FSD is available in China, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, the Netherlands, Lithuania, and other countries.
Supervised FSD is a type of driver assistance system where the vehicle can perform various driving tasks, but the driver must always monitor the vehicle, intervene immediately if necessary, and legal responsibility ultimately rests with the driver.
Currently, in the Chinese market, Tesla mainly offers basic Autopilot and enhanced Autopilot features. Basic Autopilot supports adaptive cruise control and lane keeping features, while the enhanced version additionally provides automatic lane changes and automatic parking features.
