Canadian billionaire Frank Giustra directly challenged the market's core logic of viewing Bitcoin (Bitcoin, BTC) as digital gold, stating that cryptocurrencies are not free from the risk of confiscation by state power.
According to U.Today, a cryptocurrency specialized media outlet, on May 31 (local time), Canadian billionaire philanthropist Frank Giustra, known as a gold advocate, reignited the safe-haven debate by arguing that cryptocurrencies are vulnerable to government intervention. He pointed out that it is difficult to label cryptocurrencies as digital gold because they do not receive absolute protection from state power.
This statement came after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent commented on the confiscation of cryptocurrency wallets worth approximately $1 billion. Bessent said, “Some of them are keying in their wallets right now, not realizing they’re already gone.” Giustra criticized Bitcoin's vulnerability based on this remark.
When a cryptocurrency supporter claimed that seed phrases committed to memory cannot be confiscated by the government, Giustra strongly refuted it. He said, “Look at the entire composition of the US government's Bitcoin reserves. It's 100% confiscated Bitcoin. They can trace it and they will eventually find you. There's no escape. Of course, you can leave the country as a fugitive. But is that how you want to live?”
Giustra also repeatedly emphasized that public ledger technology leaves a permanent trace. He argued that Bitcoin is not as safe as physical gold from government surveillance in times of crisis. Giustra pointed out that the U.S. government's multi-billion dollar Bitcoin holdings are all assets secured through confiscation, adding, “I want to sleep soundly at night.”
He also attacked the core concept of cryptocurrency decentralization. Giustra viewed the entry of institutional finance into cryptocurrency as a risk factor, warning that “Wall Street owns and controls the outcome.” U.Today reported that Giustra does not see Bitcoin's actual safe-haven value at the same level as physical gold.
