Q2 sales up 25%, exceeding expectations
Following China and Australia, Tesla is launching the 6-seater 'Model Y L' in the United States.
Reuters reported on the 2nd (local time) that Tesla is selling the 'Model Y L' in the United States and Puerto Rico.
This is a stretched, 3-row, 6-seater version of the existing Model Y, with a US consumer price set at $61,990 (approximately 95.48 million won).
Tesla announced the launch of the 'Model Y L' in China last August, but had maintained a negative stance on its production and sales in the US.
CEO Elon Musk himself stated via X (formerly Twitter), 'This Model Y variant will not begin production in the US until late next year (2026),' adding, 'Considering the advent of the autonomous driving era in the US, it might not be produced at all.'
It appears that the change in stance and the plan for a US launch in mid-2026 is aimed at increasing sales.
The Model Y L is considered a model that has driven Tesla's performance even in China, amidst competition with local automakers such as BYD. It has since been sold in Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia.
Tesla achieved good results in the second quarter of this year.
Total orders in Q2 were 480,126 units, significantly exceeding the market average forecast of 406,600 units.
This is a remarkable 25% increase compared to 384,000 units ordered in the same period last year.
The most affordable Model 3 and the popular SUV Model Y accounted for 97% of total orders.
While Tesla sales had slowed down due to the disappearance of US federal tax benefits for electric vehicles and deteriorating public opinion towards Musk, it is believed that demand for electric vehicles has recently surged again as oil prices rose due to the Iran war.
Despite these favorable results, Tesla's stock price fell 8% during intraday trading.
