Tottori Prefecture is currently experiencing a record labor shortage. The shortage of workers is being filled by foreign laborers. The demand for small-amount international remittances by foreign workers has surged, but the existing SWIFT network has shown its limitations. Costs increased and speeds slowed down during the transition to strict anti-money laundering regulations and the international standard ISO 20022. To overcome these inefficiencies, Tottori Bank has leveraged SBI Remit's infrastructure to transfer its small-amount remittance services to a blockchain network.
In this service, XRP acts as an optional bridge asset connecting different currencies. In segments with sufficient liquidity, the system converts JPY to XRP and then settles it into Philippine Pesos or Vietnamese Dong in just a few seconds. By bypassing intermediary banks, it resolves the chronic delay issues of the traditional financial system. End-users interact with it as if performing a standard remittance through an app. Behind the scenes, XRP enables 24/7 real-time settlements.
The phenomenon of Japanese regional banks outsourcing international remittance operations to Ripple's infrastructure is becoming a major trend in the financial sector. Regional banks, recognizing the inefficiencies of the existing banking system in the small-amount payment sector, are seeking cost reduction and service quality improvement through blockchain. Through technological advancement, they overcome the limitations of traditional finance and provide an optimized financial environment for foreign workers, thereby supporting the stability of the local economy.
As Ripple's technology penetrates deep into the Japanese financial sector, the practical utility of virtual assets is further solidified. The payment infrastructure utilizing XRP completely eliminates the limitations of traditional bank operating hours, dramatically increasing access to financial services. The combination of institutional finance and blockchain technology is expected to be a decisive turning point in reshaping the standards of the global remittance market in the future.
