With the rapid advancement of quantum computers, a fatal security fear has gripped the world that the cryptographic systems of global blockchains could be breached. In response, the XRP (Ripple) ecosystem has unveiled a multi-stage blueprint aimed at perfectly defending against quantum computing hacks, with a target completion of 2028, initiating the construction of a robust defense wall.
According to cryptocurrency media outlet Bitcoinist on April 21 (local time), Ripple announced a detailed roadmap to securely transition the XRP Ledger into the post-quantum era. This measure stems from the growing concern, following research by Google Quantum AI earlier this month, that sufficiently advanced quantum computers could neutralize the cryptographic technologies most blockchains currently rely on. Given the nature of ledgers where public keys are exposed on the blockchain during transaction signing, this proactive step aims to prevent realistic concerns that accounts of long-term holders and high-net-worth individuals could be exposed to hacking threats.
Ripple emphasized that the XRP Ledger is designed from the ground up with a structure advantageous for quantum resistance. It already incorporates a basic key rotation feature, allowing vulnerable keys to be replaced with new ones while maintaining the primary account, and a seed-based key generation feature to facilitate secure transitions. Building on this, Phase 1 of the roadmap focuses on establishing an emergency recovery plan in preparation for 'Q-Day,' when classical cryptographic systems might fail. Specifically, it plans to introduce post-quantum zero-knowledge proofs to support secure asset movement, enabling users to prove ownership without exposing existing keys, even if assets are at risk.
Phase 2, extending until the first half of 2026, involves collaborating with Project Eleven to comprehensively assess the impact of quantum risks on the network's transaction processing speed, storage space, and bandwidth, while accelerating validator-level testing. Subsequently, Phase 3, beginning in the second half of 2026, will integrate existing elliptic curve signatures and new post-quantum signature schemes into the developer network to verify their impact on real systems and boost performance.
Finally, Phase 4, running until 2028, will see a full transition to post-quantum signatures. Beyond merely upgrading cryptographic technology, Ripple plans to work closely with ecosystem partners to ensure that functionalities that operated smoothly in the existing ecosystem are not compromised, making every effort to allow all users to utilize the system securely and without disruption.
