U.S. President Donald Trump
A poll shows that the percentage of Americans who do not support U.S. President Donald Trump's job performance has reached its highest point during his tenure.
According to a poll released on the 3rd (local time) by the U.S. daily Washington Post (WP) in conjunction with ABC News and polling firm Ipsos, which surveyed 2,560 American adults from the 24th to the 28th of last month (margin of error ±2.0%p), President Trump's job approval rating was 37%, similar to the 39% in the February survey.
However, 62% of respondents said they did not approve of President Trump's job performance, the highest figure throughout his first and second terms.
While President Trump's approval rating among Republican supporters remained solid at 85%, his approval among Republican-leaning independents hit a low of 56%. Among all independents, President Trump's approval rating was only 25%.
Americans expressed broad dissatisfaction with President Trump's leadership across various key issues, including the Iran war.
Regarding President Trump's handling of the Iran war, 66% opposed it, while only 33% approved.
Approval ratings for economic issues, which played a crucial role in President Trump's victory in the 2024 presidential election, have declined since the start of the Iran war in late February.
The approval rating for economic response fell by 7 percentage points to 34% compared to the February survey, due to the impact of soaring oil prices following the Iran war. The approval rating for handling inflation also dropped by 5 percentage points to 27% during the same period.
The lowest approval rating for President Trump's administration was on the cost of living issue, with 76% opposing and only 23% approving.
When asked which party they would vote for if House elections were held today, 49% of registered voters said the Democratic Party, leading the Republican Party (44%) by 5 percentage points.
The gap was wider than in the February survey, where Democratic support was 47% and Republican support was 45%.
Among registered voters, the proportion of Democratic supporters who believed this midterm election was more important than past elections and who said they would definitely vote (73% and 79% respectively) was higher than that of Republican supporters (52% and 72% respectively).
The WP explained, "President Trump's low approval rating puts the Republican Party's slim House majority at serious risk six months before the November midterm elections, and now even threatens their Senate majority."
