"You will be the most hated person in America"…OpenAI: "Shows the lawsuit's purpose is to attack a competitor"
It has been revealed that Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, who filed a lawsuit alleging that OpenAI unfairly became a for-profit company, breaking its non-profit promise, reached out to OpenAI to discuss a settlement just before the trial began.
According to documents submitted to the court by OpenAI on the 4th (local time), CEO Musk sent a text message to Greg Brockman, president of OpenAI, asking about a settlement.
When President Brockman replied that both parties should drop the lawsuit, CEO Musk responded, "Within this week, you and Sam (Altman, OpenAI CEO) will be the most hated people in America," adding, "If you insist, that's what will happen."
OpenAI's legal team requested the court to allow President Brockman to testify about this text message, stating that it could be admitted as evidence in the trial under federal rules of evidence.
OpenAI pointed out about the message that "it shows Musk's motive for filing this lawsuit was to attack a competitor and its executives (rather than seeking legal remedies). "
CEO Musk filed the lawsuit, claiming that OpenAI abandoned its mission to develop AI for the public good and converted into a public benefit corporation (PBC) to pursue profit, and that CEO Altman and President Brockman, among others, gained unjust enrichment.
Through this lawsuit, he is demanding the removal of OpenAI's two executives, Altman and Brockman, and the return of $134 billion (approximately 19.8 billion KRW) in unjust enrichment they acquired to the OpenAI Foundation, a non-profit parent organization.
He also appeared as a direct witness in the trial from the 28th to the 30th of last month, lamenting, "I was a fool," stating that the initial $38 million he provided was used to create a for-profit company and enrich its executives.
President Brockman is scheduled to testify in court today, and CEO Altman and Microsoft (MS) CEO Satya Nadella are also expected to take the stand later.
