Cardano (ADA)'s key long-term scalability upgrade, Ouroboros Leios, is raising expectations for a launch within the year, drawing the ecosystem's attention with the potential for a 10x to 65x improvement in throughput.
According to crypto media outlet CryptoBasic on May 30 (local time), Nicolas Biri, Director of Software Architecture at Input Output Global (IOG), expressed strong confidence that the Cardano Ouroboros Leios upgrade will be successfully delivered this year. Biri praised the engineering work of the development team led by Sebastian Nagel, stating that significant progress has been made so far.
Biri's remarks followed Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson's prediction that Leios could be implemented by the end of the year. Hoskinson emphasized that Leios could bring Cardano closer to solving the blockchain trilemma by enhancing scalability without compromising decentralization and security.
Leios is considered a central pillar in Cardano's long-term scaling strategy. The protocol aims to increase network throughput and improve transaction processing efficiency through advanced parallelization technology. Hoskinson has also proposed a 24-hour development system to accelerate Leios's launch.
Input Output announced last month that the Leios testnet is scheduled for release in June 2026. The company explained that this testnet marks a turning point, moving years of academic research and large-scale simulations into the actual deployment phase.
According to Input Output, Leios can boost Cardano's network throughput by 10 to 65 times, enabling the processing of over 1,000 transactions per second. However, unlike the testnet launch scheduled for June, the exact timing of the full mainnet deployment is not yet clear.
