Expectations for Bitcoin (BTC) to be integrated into the mainstream financial system have grown significantly as the Japanese government moves to amend laws that could officially classify cryptocurrencies as financial products. In response, Metaplanet announced that it would push its Bitcoin-centric strategy even more strongly, using this as a stepping stone.
According to the cryptocurrency media outlet U.Today on April 11 (local time), Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich announced that the Japanese government approved a cabinet decision on an amendment to the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. This approval allows Japan to officially classify cryptocurrencies as financial products, which is considered a significant turning point in terms of institutional development for the Japanese cryptocurrency market.
Gerovich pointed out that as related regulations become clearer, the market is more likely to accurately evaluate key assets with strong fundamentals, transparency, and long-term sustainability. He emphasized that “Bitcoin operates based on transparency and verifiability and has no central issuer,” adding that Bitcoin is one of the most suitable assets for institutions integrating digital assets into their systems.
Gerovich believes that Japan's regulatory clarity could drive broader Bitcoin adoption. At the same time, he predicted that Japan could gain an advantage in global financial competitiveness, depending on how it utilizes this institutional reform, especially as countries worldwide accelerate their efforts to secure a leading position as digital financial hubs.
Metaplanet also made it clear that it would act immediately. Gerovich stated that Metaplanet already possesses transparency befitting a listed company and that it would expand its cryptocurrency business and focus more on its Bitcoin-centric capital strategy by leveraging Japan's new regulatory environment.
